Check Fraud: What to Know and How to Protect Yourself

Check fraud is becoming more sophisticated, but awareness and a few protective habits go a long way. Here’s what you need to know.

Why Check Fraud Is Harder to Spot Today

Paper checks haven’t gone away, and neither has check fraud. In fact, it’s growing. Scammers now use artificial intelligence, high-quality printing technology, and stolen personal and account information to produce counterfeit checks that can closely mimic legitimate ones. What once looked obviously fake may now appear nearly indistinguishable from the real thing.

That’s why knowing what to look for and taking a few simple precautions matters more than ever.

How to Spot a Fake Check

Before depositing any check, take a moment to examine it carefully. Warning signs to watch for include:

  • Print quality issues. Blurry text, inconsistent fonts, or uneven ink can indicate a counterfeit. Legitimate checks are produced with precision printing.
  • Missing or irregular security features. Authentic checks typically include a MICR line (the row of numbers at the bottom printed in magnetic ink), perforated edges, and often a watermark or security thread. If any of these are absent or look off, be cautious.
  • Mismatched information. Compare the bank name on the check against the routing number in the MICR line. If they don’t match, it’s a strong signal the check isn’t legitimate.
  • A check you weren’t expecting. Unsolicited checks are a common scam tactic, especially those connected to lottery winnings, job offers, or overpayments.
  • Requests to send money back. This is one of the most telling signs. No legitimate organization will send you a check and ask you to wire a portion back. If the check later bounces, you are responsible for the full amount, including any funds you’ve already sent.

Habits That Help Reduce Your Risk

Catching check fraud early, or avoiding it entirely, often comes down to a few consistent habits:

  • Set up text notifications. F&M Bank offers customizable in-app, email, and text alerts that notify you in real time when transactions occur, including check deposits and withdrawals. Text alerts in particular are one of the fastest ways to catch activity you don’t recognize.
  • Monitor your account regularly. Don’t rely on your monthly statement alone. Log in frequently and review recent activity. The sooner you identify something unusual, the sooner you can act.
  • Be thoughtful about how you send payments. When possible, consider digital payment options that offer more control and traceability than paper checks.
  • Safeguard your account information. Stolen account numbers and routing numbers are a key ingredient in check fraud. Protect your checks, shred old ones, and be careful about where and to whom you provide your banking details.

If Something Doesn’t Look Right

Trust your instincts. If a check feels off or a situation seems too good to be true, pause before taking action. Early detection can significantly reduce the impact of fraud.
